Natural Hair Comes to VS Fashion Show

ree

When it comes to the beauty industry there are a lot of restrictions when it comes to people of color. There is a beauty standard in America it is sad but true. The “white” standard of beauty is what others races must conform to to be seen as beautiful.

In recent years this mindset being reevaluated. We start to ask ourselves what is beauty and why is there only one set standard? There are many different types of beauty, there are many different types of people, so why isn’t this beauty celebrated? Why do we ostracize people that do not look like the “norm” instead of celebrating their differences?

As society we still have a long way to do when it comes to fix this broken system, but companies are staring to create a way to be more inclusive. Victoria Secret literally one of the biggest women’s clothing change has cast models with natural hair to be a part of their fashion show.

For those of you that don’t know the Victoria Secret Fashion Show is a HUGE DEAL! People from all over the world tune in the see all of the new looks and of course the Angels. The Victoria Secret Angels have been called some of the worlds most beautiful women. Well if they have women from all over the world walking in their show, why have they not been showing the differences of beauty between each culture?

Well this year more and more African-American models have decided to skip the weaves and extensions and wear their natural hair. Natural hair textured hair in the beauty industry is seemed as something to be ashamed of or a problem that needs to be fixed. POC models have said they will no longer conform to this norm.

They are proud of what hair grows out of their head and they will not be ashamed of it. They will wear it proudly and hope to inspire other girls that have the same texture of hair as them to be confident in who and what they are.

I love how the standard of beauty is changing. It shows that the time is progressing and we as a society have started to move forward. As I said before we have a long way to go to fix this broken system, but I have the most respect for Victoria Secret for casting models that are fierce and confident about who they are.
